Revision of the radial nerve of the shoulder after a gunshot wound

In December 2023, a team of surgeons led by Oksana Myronenko, an orthopedic traumatologist specializing in the treatment of upper extremities, performed the soldier’s eighth surgery, a revision of the radial nerve. Another surgery is planned in the spring to fully restore the functionality of the defender’s arm.

In peacetime, Andriy worked at a college as a deputy director of educational work. He was a wise mentor who was always ready to help students and colleagues. When a full-scale war broke out, he mobilized and stood up to defend his homeland.
On December 24, 2022, with the rank of senior lieutenant, he performed a combat mission near Bakhmut. During an artillery attack by Russian troops, he sustained a serious injury to his arm. A gunshot fragment hit his shoulder, breaking a bone and damaging a nerve. The arm was severely deformed, and Andriy could hardly move it.
In December 2022, the first series of surgeries was performed by a team of doctors led by orthopedic traumatologist Vasyl Shmahoy and trauma surgeon Bohdan Ryzhkov. The doctors cleaned the wound of debris, sutured the damaged nerve, removed the apparatus that fixed the bone fragments, filled the bone defect with bone cement and fixed the fracture with a titanium implant.
In March 2023, the defender underwent another surgery on his arm. Doctors filled in the bone defect with an autograft made from the soldier’s own bone and a special mineral, hydroxyapatite.
After the next surgery and rehabilitation, Andriy plans to return to his military career, as he has been a captain for more than a year. He says with a smile: “If during the medical examination the military medical commission declares me unfit for service, I will return to work – to teach children.”
As part of our  Surgical Aid for Adults program, Andriy’s treatment was free of charge. Anesthesia, surgery and inpatient treatment were funded by the international charitable organization Direct Relief in the amount of 1 585 UAH. Medicines, tests and examinations worth 318 USD were paid for thanks to generous donors from the Dobrobut medical network.
